“Recently, the European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their contribution in keeping peace on earth, especially on the European continent, during the last 60 years. That is why we appeal to you with the steadfast request that you not permit the destruction of the centre of the European Continent – Ukraine.” - These words, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Head of the UGCC, wrote in a his appeal to the leadership of the EU, in particular: the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso; the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy; and the Head of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.

The Church Head appeals for solidarity for the Ukrainian people at this difficult time when various military groups of the Russian Federation, breaking all treaties, have invaded the sovereign territory of Ukraine.

Writing to the officials of the EU, His Beatitude Sviatoslav affirmed that, “in our country there is no discrimination based on language, nationality or religion. Over the last three months, Ukraine has demonstrated to all our trust in democratic values and our choice for Europe. Our deep and sincere desire is only for the reestablishment and development of our fraternal relations with Russia in friendship and in the spirit of mutual respect.” The Church Head expressed his hope that the European officials would not respond with apathy, but would join their efforts to stopping aggression in Ukraine. He concludes his appeal to the officials by stating, “We believe that God is not in might, but in truth…. and truth is on the side of the Ukrainian people. God bless all of you!”
