Eternal Memory: Princess Maria Nikolaievna Galitzine, Mrs Andrew Bond

In the Pascha 2011 edition of Chrysostom, Fr John Salter writes:

Princess Maria came from the ancient Russian family, of Galitzine, which had very many branches in the United Kingdom and on the Continent. She was the fourth child and third daughter of Prince Nicolas Emmanuelovitch Galitzine and his wife the former Countess Irina Dimitrievna Tatistcheva, the daughter of Count Dimitri Nicolaievitch Tatistchev and his wife Vera Anatolievna Narychkine. The Galitzines were married on 30th April 1925 (13th May Old Style) in the Russian town of Perm at a time of great turmoil in Russia and for a time they were placed under house arrest by the Bolsheviks in Perm. The four elder children were all born in Perm, but on escaping to England the fourth child, Maria, was born in London.

In the 1930s the Galitzine Family were among the first Orthodox pilgrims to the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, led by Archimandrite Nikodem, later to be Archbishop of Richmond of the Russian Church-in-Exile. This would have been arranged by one of the leading Guardians of the Shrine, Father Henry Fynes-Clinton, who had been a tutor in Russia and a friend of the English tutor to the Tzarevitch and his sisters, Archimandrite Nicholas Gibbes. It was Fr. Fynes-Clinton who put forward Prince Vladimir Galitzine as the first Orthodox Guardian of the Anglican Shrine Church.

Princess Nicolas Galitzine was very active in the life of the Russian Church in Exile and particularly at the annual bazaar to raise money for the Russian Old Peoples’ Home in Chiswick. In this she was helped by her son Dmitri and her daughters Irina, Valentina and Maria. Princess Irina had as a paying guest at her home that great ecumenists Peter Lascelles, who was so well-known in Orthodox circles, particularly the Russian.

Princess Maria Nicolaievna married in London in 1973 a convert to the Russian Orthodox Church, Mr Andrew Bond, who is now Father Deacon Andrew, who has established an Orthodox centre in Suffolk – the chapel of Our Lady, Joy of Those Who Sorrow. To him and her family in their sad loss we extend our prayers and sympathy, praying that the Memory of Maria Nicolaievna may be Eternal!
