Chaldean Patriarch: Granting of Asylum to Iraqi Christians 'threatens Our Existence'

The bishops of the Chaldean Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic church in full communion with the Holy See, met in extraordinary session on November 5 to discuss their upcoming meeting with Pope Francis, the reorganization of ecclesiastical courts, and other matters.

"The Reverend Bishops studied the phenomena of the current organized migration, and the tendencies of some embassies to facilitate the granting of asylum visas," the Chaldean Catholic Patriarchate said in a statement following the meeting. "The Reverend Bishops expressed their concern. And, His Beatitude [Patriarch Louis Raphaël I Sako] requested that this issue be discussed with the heads of the Christian communities in Iraq and take practical measures to this subject that threatens our existence."
